How to Hire Hotel Staff for Peak Season: A 12-Week Plan

November 4, 2026
By Jürgen Ulbrich

To hire hotel staff for peak season, start eight to twelve weeks before your first busy week, reach candidates on Instagram and Facebook instead of waiting for job-board traffic, and pre-screen by WhatsApp so managers only meet people who can work your rota. By the time most hotels post an ad, the strongest seasonal candidates are already booked. This guide gives a hiring calendar, the numbers, an example ad, five screening questions and a budget example. As of October 2026.

At a glance
Best for Staff before the season starts: Start 8 to 12 weeks ahead — The strongest candidates are booked by the time most hotels post an ad
Best for Candidates who are not searching: Instagram and Facebook ads with WhatsApp pre-screen — Reach housekeeping, front desk and service staff on their phones
Best for Hotels that hire every season: Sprad Social Recruiting — Ad spend plus 10 %, from €1,000, last season's applicants stay in your talent pool
As of 3 Oct 2026. Budget figures are guidance, not a guarantee of applicants.

Why peak season hiring is harder every year

An AHLA survey, as quoted by the vendor SorsX, found that 65 % of hotels reported staffing shortages and 71 % had open positions they could not fill despite trying. Seasonal demand makes it worse: UK hospitality recorded 117,777 active vacancies in June 2026, 36 % more than a month earlier (The Access Group). Everyone is looking for the same housekeepers, front-desk agents and servers in the same four weeks.

Churn adds to it. In the US, accommodation and food services had a quits rate of 3.5 % in August 2026, with 507,000 quits in the month (BLS JOLTS). Hiring is not a spring project, it is a year-round routine with a seasonal spike. The Access Group puts the typical in-house cost per hire at £3,000 to £6,000, and up to 20 % of first-year salary through agencies.

A peak-season hiring calendar

Hospitality operators recommend starting recruitment eight to twelve weeks ahead. That leaves time for vetting, right-to-work checks and induction. For Christmas programmes the advice is to have the core team locked in by August or September, for summer to start in April:

Two points often get missed. First, the calendar starts at the rota, not at the ad: count roles per department and shift before you write anything. Second, the last step is the cheapest: applicants who did not start this year are your fastest hires next year, if you can still reach them.

Where seasonal hotel candidates are

  • Feed ads on Instagram and Facebook. They reach students, returners and career changers who are not searching. Meta runs job ads in the special ad category for employment with restricted targeting. Check the current rules in Meta’s help centre before you plan an audience.
  • WhatsApp instead of a form. Candidates choose in days, so a reply within the hour matters. See phone and WhatsApp for frontline roles.
  • Your own seasonal pool. Last year’s housekeeper or breakfast server already knows your property. A message in March costs almost nothing compared with a new campaign.

The ad: an example for housekeeping

A feed ad answers what, where, when and how much in three seconds. Use this as a template:

Housekeeping attendant, [hotel name], [town], seasonal May to September
Start 8 am, finish 4 pm, no late shifts, every second weekend off. $[amount] an hour, staff accommodation on request. Team of 12 with a mentor for your first week. Apply in 60 seconds on WhatsApp, no resume needed.

The pattern: one line each for role and season, shifts, money and perks, team, and the way to apply. Name the dates precisely. Candidates for seasonal jobs plan their summer around them. The Access Group reports 27 % more applications when salary is shown.

Pre-screening: five questions before the general manager calls

The ad brings applications, the work starts after. An AI talent agent asks the same five questions of everyone, around the clock, by WhatsApp, phone or web:

  1. Role: housekeeping, front desk, service, kitchen or maintenance?
  2. Experience: how long, in what kind of property?
  3. Dates: can they cover the whole season, from the first to the last week?
  4. Shifts and languages: early, late, weekends, and which guest languages?
  5. Right to work and start: are they legally allowed to work, and from when?

You then see only people who fit the season, the rota and the property. How screening differs for hourly roles is covered in screening blue-collar applicants.

Hire hotel staff with Sprad

Sprad Social Recruiting runs job ads on Instagram and Facebook, where nurses, tradespeople, drivers and other frontline workers spend time every day. An AI talent agent pre-screens every applicant via WhatsApp, phone or web. Every applicant lands in the employer's own talent pool, so the relationships stay with the employer instead of a platform. Pricing is ad spend plus 10 %, from a €1,000 budget that can be split across roles.

Budget example

Ad spend plus 10 % keeps the maths simple. These figures are arithmetic, not a forecast and not a guarantee of applicants.

CaseAd budgetFee (10 %)Total
Boutique hotel, 1 role (front desk)€1,000€100€1,100
City hotel, 3 roles (front desk, housekeeping, breakfast)€3,000€300€3,300
Resort, 6 roles for the summer€5,000€500€5,500

The Boostpoint benchmark 2026 shows a median of $13.88 per applicant on Meta across all job categories in the US. Use it only as an order of magnitude. Divide your budget by your own cost per qualified applicant. A three-month run is recommended, and the budget can move between roles each week.

Five hotel markets, five angles

  • Coastal and resort towns: staff accommodation, meals and transport belong in the first line.
  • Big cities: reliable rotas and fair weekend shifts set you apart.
  • Mountain regions: two seasons, say whether the job continues in summer or winter.
  • Airport hotels: early and late shifts, name them and the commute.
  • Festival and event towns: short peaks, hire for the event weeks and keep the contacts.

These are angles, not measurements. Your own data replaces them after two weeks of running.

Common mistakes

  • Starting in the month the season begins: the best candidates are already placed.
  • Not naming dates and shifts: seasonal candidates plan around them.
  • Slow replies: a candidate waiting two days is usually at the next hotel.
  • Discarding last season’s applicants: they are the cheapest hires you will ever make.

Frequently asked questions

When should hotels start hiring for peak season?

Eight to twelve weeks before the first busy week. For summer, hospitality operators advise starting in April, for Christmas in August or September.

How do I find seasonal hotel staff quickly?

Run Instagram and Facebook ads with dates, shifts and pay in the first lines, accept applications over WhatsApp, and pre-screen automatically so managers only talk to qualified people.

What does it cost to hire hotel staff?

In-house hiring costs £3,000 to £6,000 per hire in the UK, agencies up to 20 % of first-year salary (The Access Group). With ad spend plus 10 %, a €1,000 budget costs €1,100.

How do I keep seasonal staff for next year?

Keep every applicant and returning worker in your own talent pool and message them before the next season starts, with the dates and the pay.

Do I need to check right to work for seasonal staff?

Yes, in most countries, before the first shift. Ask early in the pre-screen so it does not delay the start date.
