Posting a job on a German-language job board costs between nothing and roughly €2,400 per role in 2026, with reach ranging from the free Federal Employment Agency to the world's largest aggregator, Indeed. Which board fits depends less on price than on whether your target group is searching at all. For office and specialist roles, comparing price and reach is enough. For frontline roles such as drivers, nurses or tradespeople, many suitable candidates already have a job and never open a board, so you need a second channel that finds people in their feed.
How we compared: five criteria
Many comparisons list 30 to 50 boards, often without a table and without a view on frontline roles. These are the criteria that actually decide the outcome:
- Pricing model: fixed price per ad, auction per click or started application, subscription or free.
- Reach: how many active job seekers see the ad, and are they your candidates?
- Fit for frontline roles: do drivers, nurses, warehouse and trades workers apply there? This is our assessment, not a measurement.
- Application effort: CV and account, or one tap on a phone?
- Who owns the contacts: do applicants stay with you or with the board?

How boards bill: four pricing models
The pricing model decides who carries the risk, so compare it before comparing the price.
Fixed price per ad
StepStone, XING, jobs.de and many niche boards sell an ad for a fixed period. You know the cost up front but get no promise of applications. For roles with many active seekers that is easy to plan.
Auction per click or started application
Indeed has no fixed list price. You set a budget and pay when someone clicks or starts an application. The price depends on job, region and competition. According to Indeed there is no flat fee, and up to three free ads per month are possible. A market report adds a minimum price from €15 per ad and month. Indeed invoices monthly or once an account reaches €500.
Free
The Federal Employment Agency publishes jobs at no charge, and Kleinanzeigen allows up to ten free job ads per month. That costs time only and is a base every search should include.
Ad spend plus a markup
With social media recruiting you pay for reach on Instagram and Facebook. At Sprad that is ad spend plus 10 %, from a €1,000 budget. The model is closer to an auction than to a fixed price: you buy attention, not a slot in a list.
1. StepStone: large board for specialists and managers
StepStone is the classic choice for specialist and management roles. Market overviews put the range at about €199 to €2,399, and the standard ad starts at €1,449 for 30 days. More on packages and hidden costs is in our article StepStone costs and prices, and options next to it are in StepStone alternatives.
2. JOIN: one ad, many boards
JOIN is not a single board but applicant tracking that distributes ads, free or paid, to many boards. That saves effort but does not replace reach: someone who is not searching will not see a distributed ad either. The prices come from a market overview as of 07/2026, so check them before you sign up.
3. Sprad Social Recruiting: reach among people who are not searching
On job boards only people who search see your ad. Sprad Social Recruiting runs ads on Instagram and Facebook, where nurses, tradespeople and drivers spend time every day. An AI talent agent pre-screens every applicant via WhatsApp, phone or web. Every applicant lands in your own talent pool, so the relationships stay with you. More on the Sprad Social Recruiting page.
Which board for which role?
Instead of a ranking, a rule of thumb that starts from one question: do your candidates search?
| Role | Sensible combination | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Office, IT, sales, management | StepStone or XING plus Indeed | many active seekers, clear search terms |
| Nursing, trades, logistics, production | Federal Employment Agency plus Indeed plus social media recruiting | boards reach the searchers, social reaches the passive |
| Mini-job, part-time, hospitality, retail | Kleinanzeigen and Federal Employment Agency, social for gaps | local, fast, low effort |
| Few, very specific roles | niche board | small, matching audience at a small price |
| Many roles, ongoing | board as a base, social with your own talent pool | contacts stay, every ad adds to the pool |
What does a hire cost? A worked example
The price per ad says little. What matters is cost per hire: all costs divided by the number of filled roles. An example with open assumptions for five warehouse workers:
- Job board: five standard StepStone ads at the list price of €1,449 each come to €7,245. If every ad leads to one hire, that is €1,449 per hire. If only every second ad succeeds, it is €2,898.
- Social media recruiting: a budget of €1,000 a month over the recommended three months is €3,000 of ad spend, €3,300 with the 10 % markup. With five hires that is €660 per hire, with three hires €1,100.
This is plain arithmetic on list prices, not a forecast. How many applicants and hires a campaign delivers depends on role, region and ad, and we do not promise a number. Internal time for interviews comes on top, and it falls when applicants are pre-screened.
What to look at when choosing
- Check the duration: 30 days at StepStone, 60 days at XING. Prices per ad are only comparable at equal duration.
- Start free: the Federal Employment Agency and free quotas cost time only.
- Cap auctions: for click or application billing, set a monthly budget and check interim results.
- Simplify applying: a long form with a CV puts off frontline candidates. A chat or short phone form helps, as our article on blue-collar screening shows.
- Secure the contacts: ask where applicants sit after the ad. Your own talent pool makes the next hire cheaper.
Frequently asked questions
Which job board is the best?
There is no best board, only the right one for your role. StepStone and XING are established for specialists and managers, Indeed for reach among active seekers, the Federal Employment Agency for a free start. For frontline roles, combine them with social media ads.
How much does a job ad on a job board cost?
Between €0 and roughly €2,400. The Federal Employment Agency is free, niche boards start at about €90, StepStone at about €199 with the standard ad at €1,449 for 30 days. Indeed bills by auction.
Are there free job boards?
Yes: the Federal Employment Agency, up to three free ads a month on Indeed, up to ten on Kleinanzeigen and a free plan at JOIN. Paid placements usually bring more reach.
Are job boards worth it for frontline jobs?
For roles with many searchers, such as helpers or warehouse work, yes. Passive professionals such as employed drivers or nurses are reached there less often. We cannot give a figure, because there is no recent representative survey. For a channel comparison, see our article on frontline recruiting by phone and WhatsApp.
How much does a hire cost?
That depends on role and channel. A study using German firm-level data puts the average at about €4,700 per hire including onboarding.
Conclusion: boards as a base, social for everyone who does not search
Job boards remain a good base because they reach searchers, and many are cheap or free. For frontline roles that is often not enough. Sprad Social Recruiting adds ads on Instagram and Facebook. Instead of rented reach you build your own talent pool: every applicant is pre-screened via WhatsApp, phone or web, and the contacts stay with you. Pricing is ad spend plus 10 %, from €1,000. You will find the offer at Sprad Social Recruiting, and matching industry pages are logistics and trades.
