To hire apprentices in Germany in 2026, run paid Instagram ads that show a real training day, let applicants apply from a phone without a cover letter, and reply on WhatsApp within a day. Teenagers rarely look for an Ausbildung on job boards. They find it where they already spend time, so employers who meet them there with concrete information get applications from people who actually want the trade. This is social media recruiting for German vocational training.
The situation: unfilled places and young people without one, at the same time
According to the Vocational Training Report 2026 (cut-off 30 September 2025), 54,400 apprenticeship places stayed unfilled across Germany, 15,000 fewer than a year earlier. At the same time 39,900 applicants had no place, the highest figure since 2009, and another 84,400 young people were still searching. The problem is not a lack of teenagers. It is a lack of fit: trade, location and timing do not meet.
For a training employer that means applicants rarely fail to exist. They do not see your place, do not understand the trade, or have signed elsewhere after a week without a reply.

Where the target group is
According to the Azubi-Recruiting-Trends 2023 study, only 11 % of German students actively use social media to look for an apprenticeship (as reported by Personalwirtschaft). Of those, 52 % named Instagram, 39 % YouTube and 28 % TikTok. The German skilled-labour competence centre KOFA says a quarter of young people use social media for career orientation. Three lessons:
- Social media is rarely where they search, but often where they discover. Many teenagers do not yet know your trade exists. An ad creates interest, the application follows later.
- Instagram is the core, TikTok an add-on. You run Instagram ads in the same Ads Manager as Facebook ads. TikTok needs its own account and videos.
- Parents have a say. A second ad aimed at parents on Facebook (pay, prospects of being kept on) is cheap and answers the questions teenagers hear at home.
The ad: an example for a training place
“Apprenticeship as an electronics technician” tells a 16-year-old little. A concrete offer with daily life and pay works better:
Apprenticeship as an electronics technician in Sampletown, start 1 September
From day one you work on real sites with a fixed trainer at your side. €1,000 training pay in year one, 30 days of leave, phone and tools provided. Good apprentices get a permanent job. Message us on WhatsApp, no cover letter, a photo of your school report can follow later. We reply within 24 hours.
Use only what is true for you and state the pay. A 20-second Reel with a current apprentice showing their day beats any stock photo. Keep the tone relaxed but honest: hiding a physically demanding job loses the apprentice in the probation period.
What is different with minors
Your audience is often under 18. Meta restricts targeting for minors, according to Meta's help pages essentially to age and location, and the “employment” ad category adds further limits. Check the current rules in Ads Manager before launch. In practice you steer by location radius and by the ad itself.
Pre-screening: five questions on WhatsApp
School applicants' documents say little. Short chat questions say more, and teenagers usually answer within minutes. Why phone and messengers beat email for frontline hiring is covered in frontline recruiting by phone and WhatsApp. Five questions:
- Which school qualification are you taking, and when do you finish?
- Have you done an internship or taster day in this trade?
- Where do you live, and how would you get to us?
- When would you like to start?
- May we involve your parents if needed?
Do not ask about origin, religion or family plans. With minors, get data consent right and clear it with your data protection officer, see contacting candidates on WhatsApp: is it allowed? (German). This is not legal advice.
Budget example: what a campaign can cost
Reliable German cost-per-application figures for apprenticeships are scarce. As a US reference, the vendor Boostpoint reports a median of $13.88 per application in its 2026 benchmark (891 campaigns), varying by industry. German values can differ. Sprad has not published campaign benchmarks of its own, so the table uses assumed costs for an employer with three training places:
| Assumed cost per application | Ad spend €1,200 | Of which suitable (assumed 25 %) | Cost per suitable application |
|---|---|---|---|
| €12 | 100 applications | 25 | about €48 |
| €20 | 60 applications | 15 | about €80 |
| €35 | 34 applications | 8 | about €150 |
This is a worked example, not a forecast. Spread the budget over all training occupations and start early: an employer that begins in summer for a September start meets teenagers who have already signed. Plan ads from the autumn of the previous year. For a comparison with classic job ads see StepStone costs and prices.
Regions: what to watch
These are assessments, not measurements:
- Berlin, Hamburg: many applicants but also many employers. The trade must be clear at first glance.
- Munich, Stuttgart: housing costs matter, a transport or rent subsidy can decide.
- Leipzig, Dresden: smaller cohorts, so start earlier and use a wider radius.
- Rural areas: commuting is the main issue. Say in the ad how apprentices get to you.
How Sprad solves this
Sprad Social Recruiting runs job ads on Instagram and Facebook, where nurses, tradespeople, drivers and other frontline workers spend time every day. An AI talent agent pre-screens every applicant via WhatsApp, phone or web. Every applicant lands in the employer's own talent pool, so the relationships stay with the employer instead of a platform. Pricing is ad spend plus 10 %, from a €1,000 budget that can be split across roles. Google and TikTok are to follow. For training employers this means candidates who are not ready this year stay in the pool and can be approached next year. More at Sprad Social Recruiting and the talent pool.
FAQ
How do I find apprentices if nobody applies?
Show the trade before you ask for applications. Instagram ads with real daily life, clear pay and an application from a phone reach teenagers who do not know your trade yet. Reply within a day.
Which platform is best for apprenticeship marketing in Germany?
Instagram. In the Azubi-Recruiting-Trends 2023 study, 52 % of students who search via social media named Instagram, ahead of YouTube (39 %) and TikTok (28 %). Facebook reaches parents more than teenagers.
What does social media apprenticeship marketing cost?
You set the ad budget. With Sprad you pay budget plus 10 %, from a €1,000 budget. How many applications that brings depends on trade, region and ad. There is no guarantee.
Can I target minors with ads?
Yes, but Meta limits targeting for under-18s, and the employment category adds more rules. Check the current state in Ads Manager.
When should I start for a September start?
From the autumn of the previous year. The earlier teenagers know your business, the more likely they apply before signing elsewhere.
May I message applicants on WhatsApp?
If they have consented, for example by applying through WhatsApp and receiving your privacy notice in the first message. With minors, clear consent with your data protection officer first.
