How to Hire Electricians in Germany: Recruiting for Electrical Contractors

October 3, 2026
By Jürgen Ulbrich

The fastest way to hire electricians in Germany in 2026 is to reach them where they already spend time every day: on their phones, in Instagram and Facebook feeds, not on job boards. The market is thin, with more than 18,300 skilled workers missing in building electrics alone according to KOFA. Combine ads that state the pay, a short application path and a quick pre-screen via WhatsApp and you reach journeymen who are not actively looking. As of October 2026.

At a glance
Best for Reach electricians who are not actively looking: Paid ads on Instagram and Facebook — most journeymen switch for pay, team and site, not through a job board
Best for Fewer dead-end applications: Pre-screening via WhatsApp, phone or web — clarify training, experience, licence, location and start date up front
Best for One contractor or several sites: Sprad Social Recruiting — ad spend plus 10 %, from €1,000, applicants stay in your own talent pool
As of 3 Oct 2026. Figures from 2023/2024, see sources. Budget figures are guidelines, not a guarantee of applicants.

How big is the electrician shortage?

The electrical trades are among the occupations with the tightest labour gap in Germany. KOFA, the competence centre for skilled-labour security at the Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft, counted more than 18,300 missing skilled workers in building electrics for 2024 and about 14,200 in electrical plant engineering. The trade association ZVEH reported more than 33,500 open journeyman positions and over 17,000 unfilled apprenticeships at the end of 2023.

The energy transition drives the demand: photovoltaics, heat pumps, EV charging and smart-building installations all need qualified electricians, while many experienced journeymen retire. A job-board ad mostly reaches people every other contractor is also competing for. For the wider picture see our page on recruiting in the skilled trades.

Where are electricians?

Electricians rarely look for work in the traditional sense. They move from site to site and read on their phones during breaks. Three things work better there than a CV form:

  • Feed ads: paid ads on Instagram and Facebook reach journeymen who are content but would switch for the right offer.
  • A short application path: three details and one tap, no cover letter. The applicant replies on WhatsApp instead of a form.
  • A fast answer: the contractor who replies within hours beats the one who calls on Monday.

Note that Meta's special ad category for employment limits targeting: age, gender and postcode cannot be chosen, and location works only as a radius of at least 25 km (15 miles). Check the current rules in Ads Manager. Ad copy and location replace the filters. For the messaging side read why frontline recruiting runs on phone and WhatsApp, not email.

Sample ad for electricians

This is an invented template to show the structure. Replace pay, location and benefits with your real values:

Electrician (m/f/d) for building services, Cologne area
€3,400 to €4,000 gross per month, company van, 30 days holiday, permanent contract from now. You install photovoltaics and wallboxes in new builds and existing buildings, no overnight assignments. Tap “Apply now”, answer four questions on WhatsApp and we will reply today.

The template names pay and place, describes the work instead of clichés and keeps the application small. That beats “we are looking for reinforcements for our dynamic team” almost every time.

Pre-screening: five questions before the first call

Many applications are useless to an electrical contractor: wrong certificate, wrong region, different trade. Clarify the must-haves before a person spends time. An AI talent agent can ask these five questions around the clock via WhatsApp, phone or web:

Infographic: five pre-screening questions for electrician applicants
Five questions before the first call. Source: Sprad, as of October 2026.
  1. Training: qualified electrician or journeyman?
  2. Experience: installation, service or industrial, where last?
  3. Licence: driving licence B, qualified electrical person?
  4. Location: commute to your shop, willing to do site work?
  5. Start: from when, with what notice period?

After a few hours you can see who fits. If you also hire apprentices, the same logic applies, see screening blue-collar applicants.

Budget example: what does finding an electrician cost?

Social media recruiting charges for reach, not for the hire. The calculation below shows orders of magnitude. It is not a forecast and not a guarantee of applicants.

ModelCalculationCost
Ad spend plus 10 % (Sprad), 1 role€1,000 budget over 3 months€1,100 total
Ad spend plus 10 %, 3 roles€3,000 budget, splittable€3,300 total
Social agency with flat fee€5,000 per position according to the provider€5,000 per role
Commission model14 to 22 % of annual salary, assumed €45,000€6,300 to €9,900 per hire

For reach, the Boostpoint Benchmark 2026 reports a US median of $13.88 per applicant (891 campaigns), so roughly 70 applicants per $1,000 of ad spend. German electricians may differ because the target group is scarce. Agency and commission prices come from the providers, as of October 2026. With ad spend plus 10 % you know the cost up front, and the pool stays yours.

Common mistakes when hiring electricians

  • No pay in the ad: journeymen compare instantly, without a number they keep scrolling.
  • An application path that is too long: asking for CV, certificates and cover letter loses the applicants who are on site right now.
  • Replying too late: several contractors message the same journeyman, the first reply often decides.
  • Not keeping applicants: someone who does not fit today may fit in six months. Without a pool the contact is gone.

Five regions, five approaches

  • Berlin: many new-build and renovation projects and fierce competition for journeymen, so lead with pay and a company van.
  • Hamburg: port, industry and building services with heavy commuting, a 25 km radius covers the surroundings.
  • Munich: high living costs, a strong pay or housing offer sets you apart.
  • Cologne and Rhine-Ruhr: a dense market with many contractors, so local messaging and short commutes count.
  • Stuttgart: industry and plant engineering, plant electricians often look for stability and training.

The cities are examples, not measurements. What matters is that your ad uses the radius around the job site and names the commute.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find an electrician quickly?

Fastest with paid Instagram and Facebook ads that state the pay, a short WhatsApp application path and a reply on the same day. For journeymen plan for weeks, not days.

What does it cost to find an electrician?

It depends on the model. With ad spend plus 10 %, a €1,000 budget costs €1,100 in total. Agencies quote €5,000 per position according to the provider, commission models 14 to 22 % of annual salary.

Do I have to use the employment ad category?

Yes, as soon as the ad promotes a job. Age, gender and postcode cannot then be chosen and location works only as a radius. Check the current rules in Ads Manager.

Can I contact applicants via WhatsApp?

Yes, if they agreed, for example by tapping “Apply now” with a note on the contact channel. This is not legal advice.

How do I secure electricians long term?

With your own talent pool: every applicant who does not fit today stays reachable. The second role then costs no new reach.
