How to Hire Truck Drivers Fast: A 7-Day Plan for Fleets

November 4, 2026
By Jürgen Ulbrich

To hire truck drivers fast, run three tracks at once: a staffing agency or temp driver to cover the empty seat in one to three days, paid Instagram and Facebook ads to find permanent drivers within a week, and a pre-screen that sends only qualified applicants to dispatch the same day. Traditional hiring takes three to six weeks, according to one industry guide. As of October 2026.

At a glance
Best for A truck is standing empty this week: Staffing agency or temp driver — 1 to 3 days according to providers, but a 30 to 50 % markup on hourly wages
Best for The next hire should be faster: Instagram and Facebook ads with a WhatsApp pre-screen — launch in days, pay only for reach, qualified drivers reach dispatch the same day
Best for A fleet that hires all year: Sprad Social Recruiting — ad spend plus 10 %, from €1,000, applicants stay in your own talent pool for the next opening

What an empty truck costs

Speed matters because idle trucks burn money. O Trucking, a driver placement firm, estimates the cost of one empty truck at $900 to $2,115 per day once lost revenue, payments, insurance and detention fees are counted. That is a provider estimate, not a measurement, but even the low end shows why a three-week search hurts more than a premium on an agency invoice.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts about 2.2 million heavy and tractor-trailer driver jobs, with roughly 214,500 openings a year through 2035. Turnover at large truckload carriers runs near 90 % a year, according to the American Trucking Associations as quoted in trade press. Everybody is hiring, and the same drivers get several calls a week.

A 7-day plan for the next driver

This plan is a working template, not a measured benchmark. Adjust it to your fleet:

  1. Day 1: write the offer: pay, home time, lane, equipment and requirements. Decide who answers leads, and by when.
  2. Day 1 to 2: cover the empty seat with an agency or a temp driver if the truck is idle. Ask for the markup in writing.
  3. Day 2: build the ad: a real photo of your truck, pay in the first line, two or three variants.
  4. Day 2 to 3: set up the instant form with three to five questions, a consent line for WhatsApp and phone, and the job-ad special category in Meta Ads Manager.
  5. Day 3 to 5: launch, reply to every lead within the hour and pre-screen by WhatsApp, phone or web.
  6. Day 5 to 7: call qualified drivers, book road tests and paperwork, check cost per qualified applicant.

The first hire usually takes longer than a week, because notice periods and onboarding checks take time. The point of the plan is that the pipeline is full after a week instead of after a month.

No channel does everything. An agency solves today’s empty seat. Ads fill the pipeline for the next ones. A pool of past applicants answers the next opening in hours.

Do you need a CDL?

In the U.S., a commercial driver’s license is required for vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, for trailers over 10,000 pounds in a combination above that weight, and for hazardous materials or passenger vehicles. Box trucks and vans below those limits do not need one. If your delivery work fits that gap, your pool of possible drivers is much larger, and an ad that says “no CDL required” gets a different audience than one that says “CDL-A”. Check the federal rules and your state before you write the ad.

Speed rules that win drivers

  • Reply within the hour. A driver who fills in a form has often applied to several carriers.
  • Keep the form short. Three to five questions, readable on a phone in under a minute.
  • Put pay in the ad. Hidden pay reads as below-market pay.
  • Pre-screen automatically. An AI talent agent can ask about license, experience, medical card, lane and start date around the clock, so dispatch speaks only to drivers who can start.
  • Keep everyone. The driver who cannot start in October may start in January.

Why phone and WhatsApp beat email for frontline roles is covered in this article, and how screening differs for blue-collar roles in screening blue-collar applicants.

Budget example

These figures show the order of magnitude. They are not a forecast and not a guarantee of applicants.

One role: a €1,000 budget costs €1,100 with ad spend plus 10 %. At the Boostpoint median of $13.88 per applicant, $1,000 of ad spend buys roughly 70 applicants across all categories. For drivers the number can be lower or higher.

Five roles: a €5,000 budget costs €5,500 and can shift between roles every week. A single permanent placement fee of $2,000 to $5,000 puts that in perspective, and the applicants who did not start remain in your pool.

Common mistakes when hiring drivers fast

  • Hiring only when a truck is idle: the search then starts at the most expensive moment.
  • Using a placement agency as the only channel: you pay again for every new opening, and the contact stays with the agency.
  • Skipping the pre-screen to move faster: dispatch then loses hours on drivers who cannot start.
  • Posting without pay: fewer applicants, and the wrong ones.

Sprad Social Recruiting runs job ads on Instagram and Facebook, where nurses, tradespeople, drivers and other frontline workers spend time every day. An AI talent agent pre-screens every applicant via WhatsApp, phone or web. Every applicant lands in the employer's own talent pool, so the relationships stay with the employer instead of a platform. Pricing is ad spend plus 10 %, from a €1,000 budget that can be split across roles.
