A job ad costs anywhere from nothing to about €1,500 per role on a German job board and roughly $300 to $1,000 a month on a US board, depending on whether you pay a flat price, per click, per hire or through ad spend. Free listings exist (Germany's Federal Employment Agency, the first Kleinanzeigen ad, three Indeed ads a month), but the number that matters is cost per hire, not the price of the listing. All prices below are listed prices as of 3 October 2026.
The six ways you pay for a job ad
Quotes look incomparable because providers sell different things. One sells a place on a page for 30 days, another sells clicks, another sells a hire. Sort every offer into one of these models first.
| Model | Examples (listed price) | You pay for | Who carries the risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free listing | Federal Employment Agency job board (free) · Kleinanzeigen: first job ad per 30 days free, then €12.99 to €14.99 · Indeed: up to three free ads a month · LinkedIn: one free job at a time | a basic listing, no promotion | you, with little reach and control |
| Flat price per listing | niche boards €89 to €199 · stellenanzeigen.de €290 (entry level) to over €920 · jobs.de €979 to €1,485 · Jobware €1,150 to €1,850 · StepStone from €199, standard ad €1,449 | a place on the board for about 30 days | you, the price does not depend on the result |
| Subscription | ZipRecruiter $299 / $599 / $999 per month · StepStone package from €249 per month on a 12-month term | a number of active jobs for a period | you, even when a role is filled early |
| Pay per click or application | Indeed Sponsored Jobs $0.10 to $5+ per click, $5 per day minimum | interactions with your ad | shared, but clicks are not applicants |
| Success fee | Workwise 14 / 18 / 22 % of the gross annual salary per hire | a hire | the provider, at a high fee per hire |
| Ad budget plus markup | Sprad: ad budget plus 10 %, from €1,000 budget · HeyJobs HIRE from €400 per month · TalentBait from €700 per 30 days | social ads on Instagram and Facebook | you, but every euro of spend is visible |
Job boards: what a listing costs
German boards cluster in three tiers. Niche boards run roughly €90 to €200 per listing (stellenwerk €89, greenjobs €98, heise Jobs €129, medi-jobs €199). Generalists charge about €900 to €1,900 (jobs.de, karriere.at, Jobware). StepStone sits in between with entry packages from €199 and a standard ad at €1,449 per listing. Our StepStone cost guide breaks that down, so we do not repeat it here.
In the US the logic is per click or per month. Indeed Sponsored Jobs cost about $0.10 to $0.50 per click for low-competition roles such as warehouse or retail, around $1 to $2.70 for typical office roles and $3 to $5 or more for competitive ones, with a $5 daily minimum and a $25 floor per job. ZipRecruiter charges $299 (one job), $599 (three) or $999 (five and more) per month. LinkedIn lets you post one free job, paused after 14 days and closed after 30.
Social media job ads: what changes in the bill
Social ads work the other way round. You do not rent a place where people search, you pay Meta to show the ad to people who match the role, whether they are looking or not. The bill is therefore ad spend plus a provider fee. The fee can be a flat package, a share of a salary or a markup.
HeyJobs sells packages: HIRE starts at €400 per job and month with a €1,200 minimum budget, and the candidate pool belongs to the provider.
TalentBait prices a campaign: from €700 per 30 days. Whether the media budget is inside that price is not stated.
Workwise is the success-fee outlier: you pay 14, 18 or 22 % of the gross annual salary, but only when you hire.
For the ad cost itself there is one open 2026 benchmark with a real sample: 891 managed Meta campaigns, median $13.88 per applicant, from about $3 at the cheap end to $66 at the expensive end (Boostpoint, USA). It counts applicants, not hires, and we found no equivalent for Germany.

Worked example: one role and five roles
One role, 30 days. A StepStone standard ad costs €1,449. A niche board costs about €129 if one exists for your profession. A free listing costs €0. A Sprad campaign with the minimum €1,000 budget costs €1,100 (budget plus 10 %). On Indeed, a mid-sized employer in the US reports spending roughly $600 to $1,200 a month in total.
Five roles, 30 days. Five StepStone ads cost €7,245. Five jobs.de ads at the lowest price cost €4,895. Five roles on one ZipRecruiter Pro plan cost $999. A €5,000 social budget costs €5,500 in total with the Sprad markup and can be split across the five roles freely. Workwise charges only when you hire, 14 % of an assumed €36,000 salary is €5,040 per hire.
The price of the listing says nothing about what you get for it. That is why the next table turns the same spend into cost per hire, based on how many of your five roles you actually fill.
| Five roles, 30 days | Total fees | Cost per hire at 5 hires | at 3 hires | at 1 hire |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| StepStone standard ads (5 × €1,449) | €7,245 | €1,449 | €2,415 | €7,245 |
| Sprad Social Recruiting (€5,000 budget + 10 %) | €5,500 | €1,100 | €1,833 | €5,500 |
| Workwise (14 % of €36,000) | €5,040 per hire | €5,040 | €5,040 | €5,040 |
This is arithmetic on listed prices, not a result. It shows the shape of the decision: with fixed fees the cost per hire rises steeply when few roles fill, a success fee stays flat but starts high. Add your own time on top. Industry sources put the average cost per hire in the US at about $5,475 for non-executive roles (SHRM 2025, as reported) and at €3,500 to €5,000 for specialists in Germany, both including more than ad fees. Use them as a sanity check, not as a target.
Hidden costs that change the answer
- Listing duration and renewal. Thirty days is common. A role that stays open for three months costs three listings, not one.
- Minimum budget or term. HeyJobs HIRE has a €1,200 minimum budget, other providers recommend three months. Check what you commit to.
- Who owns the applicants. On a board or platform pool, contacts stay with the platform. When you stop paying, the reach is gone.
- Your own time. Every unqualified application costs minutes. Pre-qualifying by chat or phone, as described in our guide on the channels frontline workers actually answer, moves that effort off your team.
- Clicks are not applicants. A $1 click is cheap only if it turns into a qualified application.
Which option is worth it?
- Office and specialist roles with active job seekers: a board listing, ideally a niche board, plus the free options.
- Frontline and shift roles in healthcare, trades or logistics: people who are already employed rarely check job boards, so social ads reach more of them. See our overview on screening blue-collar and white-collar candidates.
- One or two high-value hires: a success fee limits your risk.
- Recurring hiring: prefer a model where applicants end up in a pool you own, so the next role does not start from zero.
How Sprad prices social media recruiting
Sprad Social Recruiting runs job ads on Instagram and Facebook, where nurses, tradespeople, drivers and other frontline workers spend time every day. An AI talent agent pre-screens every applicant via WhatsApp, phone or web. Every applicant lands in your own talent pool, so the relationships stay with you instead of a platform. Pricing is ad budget plus 10 %, from a €1,000 budget that can be split across roles, with three months recommended. See Sprad Social Recruiting or the pages for healthcare and logistics.
FAQ
How much does a job ad cost?
On German boards from €0 (free listings) over €89 to €199 on niche boards to €900 to €1,900 on generalist boards. In the US, from $0.10 per click on Indeed or $299 per month on ZipRecruiter. Social media ads start at about €1,000 ad budget per month.
Are free job ads worth it?
They cost nothing and are worth using, for example the Federal Employment Agency board or the first Kleinanzeigen listing. Reach and control are limited, so most employers combine them with a paid channel.
Is social media cheaper than a job board?
It depends on the role and on how many applicants turn into hires. For frontline roles social ads often reach people who never visit boards. Compare cost per hire, not the price of the listing.
How is cost per hire calculated?
Add all fees, ad spend and internal time for a role and divide by the number of hires. Our table above shows how the same spend gives very different results at five, three or one hire.
Do job boards guarantee applicants?
No. Listing, click and subscription prices buy visibility, not applicants. Sprad does not guarantee applicants either, it gives budget guidance per role.
