"Free" is rarely free and unlimited at the same time: Atlas Career and applyGOAT are the two tools that advertise unlimited tailored CVs and cover letters at no cost, while Kickresume, Rezi, Teal, Zety and Canva give you a free tier with a catch. The catch is usually a credit allowance (Teal), a download cap (Rezi: 3 PDFs), a text-only export (Zety: .txt) or AI writing that is paid (Kickresume). Check these five limits before you enter your data. Prices below are from each provider's pricing page, October 2026.
What "free" can mean: five limits to check
Most "free AI resume builder" pages are true in the headline and silent in the fine print. In practice five limits decide whether you can finish a job search without paying:
- AI credits: a small number of AI generations per month, then a paywall.
- Download cap or file type: you can edit for free but not export a usable PDF.
- Number of documents: one resume only, so no separate version per job.
- Trial that renews: a low-priced start that turns into a subscription.
- Tailoring per job: a template filler is not the same as a CV rewritten for each ad.
The last point matters most. Germany's Federal Employment Agency tells applicants to adapt the CV to each position. A free tool that gives you one generic document does not solve that.
The comparison: what is really free
Blank cells mean we found no reliable statement on the provider's pricing or FAQ page, and we left them empty rather than guess.

The eight tools, one by one
1. Atlas Career: free without a quota, tailored per job
Atlas Career (formerly Atlas Apply) is the only tool in this list that starts from the job: it searches 1.5M+ active jobs straight from employers' career sites (100,000+ in the DACH region), gives each role a match score with reasons, and writes a tailored CV and, on request, a cover letter for every application. There are no plans and no quotas.
Atlas sends nothing on its own. You review the documents, download the PDF and apply directly with the employer. It does not invent facts: it words your real experience more strongly. Data stays in the EU under GDPR and is never sold. Its weakness is breadth of design: you will not find 40 template styles, and the job base is strongest in DACH and Europe.
2. Teal: strong tracker, AI on a credit leash
Teal's free plan is generous for building and tracking: unlimited resumes and PDF downloads. The limit sits on the AI. Teal's help center names 2 credits for professional summaries, and unlimited generation needs Teal+. Note the weekly price: $13 per 7 days adds up faster than the $29 monthly tier suggests.
3. Kickresume: unlimited documents, paid AI
Kickresume lets you create unlimited resumes and matching cover letters for free, with 4 basic templates each and unlimited downloads. The AI writer and the ATS checker are not in the free plan. Its pricing page states a 14-day money-back guarantee on paid plans and free access for verified students.
4. Rezi: free is a sampler
Rezi's free plan includes the AI resume writer and editor, but caps you at 1 resume and 3 PDF downloads. That is enough for one polished document, not for 15 tailored ones. Pro costs $29 per month; a lifetime option costs $149 once.
5. Zety: free to edit, not to download
Zety is the clearest "hidden cost" case. The Basic plan lets you build, but the download is plain text only. The Pro trial costs $1.95 for 14 days, then renews at $25.95 every 4 weeks, and the yearly plan ($71.40) auto-renews. Cancel before day 14 if you only want to look.
6. Canva: a layout, not a tailoring tool
Canva is the right choice when you already have the text and want a designed page. Free includes up to 20 uses of Standard or Premium AI and no Ultra AI tools; Pro costs $144 per year. It does not read a job ad and rewrite your CV for it.
7. applyGOAT: the closest rival on "unlimited"
applyGOAT's homepage promises unlimited free resumes and cover letters, an ATS match score and PDF export, with no card and no expiry. It has the same core idea as Atlas: paste a job, get a tailored document. Two things to know: the fine print says you upgrade once you apply to more roles than the free plan covers, and the published rankings and tests on its own site are written by the provider itself. Atlas additionally brings its own job search and match score across 1.5M+ jobs.
8. ChatGPT: free text, manual work
ChatGPT can rewrite bullet points and draft a letter if you paste your CV and the job ad. It is free to try, but you do the layout, the export and the repeat for every job. For prompts that work, see our 75 AI prompts for job applications, and for when to use a general model instead of a specialist tool, ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini for applications.
Hidden costs: where "free" turns into a bill
- PDF behind a paywall: Zety's free plan exports .txt only; Rezi stops at 3 PDFs.
- Credits: Teal's free AI allowance is small, and Canva Free counts up to 20 AI uses.
- Auto-renew: a $1.95 trial can become $25.95 every 4 weeks. In the EU the Consumer Rights Directive gives you a 14-day right of withdrawal for most online purchases, but digital services you start using early can be treated differently, so cancel on the trial page rather than rely on a refund.
- Weekly pricing: a weekly rate looks small and costs more per month than the monthly tier.
A worked example with clear assumptions: a 12-week job search with 15 applications, each with its own CV and cover letter. The prices are the listed ones, the sums are ours.
| 12-week search, 15 tailored applications | Does the free plan cover it? | Cost if you need more (arithmetic on listed prices) |
|---|---|---|
| Atlas Career | Yes, no quota | 0 |
| Teal | Resumes yes; AI credits run out | $79 for 90 days, or 3 × $29 = $87 |
| Kickresume | Writing yes, AI writing no | €54 quarterly, or 3 × €24 = €72 |
| Rezi | No: 1 resume, 3 PDFs | 3 × $29 = $87, or $149 once |
| Zety | No: .txt only | $1.95 + 3 renewals × $25.95 = $79.80 if cancelled at week 12 |
| Canva | Layout yes, no per-job tailoring | $144 for the year |
| applyGOAT | Probably, threshold unclear | Not listed |
| ChatGPT | Text yes, by hand | Paid tier optional |
The Zety row shows how a forgotten trial runs: if you never cancel for a full year, 13 renewals of $25.95 add up to $337.35 (arithmetic on the listed price).
Which one should you pick?
- You apply to many jobs and want a tailored CV and letter each time: Atlas Career, or applyGOAT as a second look.
- You want one polished document: Rezi or Kickresume; read the download and AI limits first.
- You already have the text and want a nice layout: Canva.
- You mainly want to track applications: Teal.
- You want to try one thing for free today: ChatGPT with your CV and the ad, then a tool for the document.
Before you sign up to anything, ask: can I download a usable PDF for free, how many documents, what happens after day 14, and where does my CV go? On the last one, a CV is personal data. In the EU the GDPR gives you the right to have it deleted, and employers that screen applicants with AI fall under the EU AI Act's rules for high-risk systems. For DACH-specific habits such as the photo, see AI for job applications in Europe; for the wider tool landscape, Best AI tools for job applications in Europe and, on cover letters, AI cover letter generators for Europe.
If you want to try the unlimited route, open Atlas Career and have your first tailored CV in minutes; the job search is free too.

Which AI resume builders are actually free to download?
Teal and Kickresume list free downloads on their free plans; Rezi allows 3 PDFs; Zety's free plan only exports plain text.
Is Kickresume's AI free?
According to its pricing page, the AI writer is not listed on the free plan. The free plan covers unlimited resumes and cover letters with basic templates.

Is it safe to upload my CV to a free tool?
Check where the data is hosted and whether it can be deleted. Atlas hosts in the EU under GDPR and never sells data; for other tools, read the privacy policy before uploading.
Do I need a different CV for every job?
The Federal Employment Agency advises adapting your CV to each position. A tool that tailors per job saves the manual work.
